Maintaining and monitoring structural integrity of aging infrastructure is a key challenge, made current and grievous in recent years by several critical failures. Large scale civil infrastructures continuously undergo deterioration and are subjected to weathering effects and operational loads. Being able to timely detect, localize, and predict structural failure could provide a more cost-efficient and effective way to manage our infrastructure. Besides traditional visual structural assessments, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) tools have been developed due to advances in wireless sensing technologies . SHM sensor wireless networks are used to monitor the health of a structure based on measurable response parameters. Nonetheless, majority of the sensors are not sensitive enough to capture these parameters in large scale infrastructure, are power hungry and difficult to power and need to make key trade-off decision around technologies used.
